This week was a short and fun week. The students loved playing outside during recess thanks to the warmer temperatures. They also enjoyed learning new strategies to tackle division and subtraction with regrouping. If your child is in advance math, ask them to show you how to divide using the repeated subtraction method. If your child is an on level math student, ask them to show you two ways to subtract 3-digit numbers. They are making lots of progress and I am so proud of them. Remember to have them practice IREADY math and reading for 45 minutes in each subject. They should score at least 80 on the quiz at the end of each IREADY lesson.
In science, the students did a phenomenal child on their science projects. They are so tech savvy! Some students inserted videos into their PowerPoints to support the topic. This week kicked off a new science unit on Matter. They learned about the three states of matter. Ask your child, "What are the 3 states of matter?" Next week, they will have a lab with Mr. John on the changes of matter.
We continued to read the chapter book, "Miss Brown is Upside Down." They are having a blast listening to the twist and turns of the main character, AJ. Ask your child what they like about the book. They are using the stop and jot strategy. This helps readers stay focused on characters and not forget what's happening in the story. In addition, the students did an amazing job on their Unit 4 Reading Test. I've recorded the scores on Infinite Campus. Their written responses were so on point! They used transitional words with a comma afterwards and a lot of them even cited the text. Yes, your 2nd grader was able to cite the text. This has been a tough year, but they are learning and growing.
Remember there is no school on Monday and picture day is Tuesday. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Everyone should have my email and cell phone number, I respond to both. Have an amazing long weekend!
