This was a successful although we had a small face to face class. The students enjoyed visiting the library and checking out new books. In addition, the kids began a new unit in science. They learned about stars and how sun is the closest star to earth. In addition, they conducted a couple of experiments that explained why some stars are larger than others. Ask your child, "Why do we see the sun more than we see the other stars?"
Both math groups worked on line plots. They were assessed on line plots and how to create them. Students will continue working on line plots along with adding 3 digit numbers. One of the struggles a lot of the students are having is explaining how they solved the answer in words. We will continue to work on it throughout the school year.
Also, the students enjoyed learning about figurative language and how authors and poets use alliteration, similes, and metaphors to make their poems more interesting. The students shared their poems with the class. I was really impressed with how they were able to use mentor text as inspiration to create their own poems.
Students that were on IREADY for 45 minutes in reading and math and scored 80% or higher were given a golden star for the week to post outside the classroom. The 2nd grade team will be giving out gold stars every Friday. Also, the student with the highest percentage and time in reading and math will be given a special award.
The week ended with the students book nomination writings being posted on the school's bulletin board across from the office. If you're visiting the school this upcoming week check out your child's writing. They are also posted on Seesaw.
The lesson plans for next week are posted on the Lesson Plan tab. If you have any questions, please email me.
